I checked /var/log/pm-suspend.log. With pm-suspend (successful) it says

  Initial commandline parameters:

but with kpowersave (failure) it says

  Initial commandline parameters: --quirk-s3-bios
- --quirk-s3-mode

In other words those quirks no longer work for some reason. Hmm, now what?
