What do you mean by "it does not return"?

Probably not. Non-working F4 and F12 keys sound like problems with the
hotkey mask or bad userspace configuration on handling ACPI events. You
are using thinkpad-acpi, aren't you? Not using thinkpad-acpi should
bring back legacy behaviour: Fn-F4 will show up as "sleep button" and
you can configure userspace to handle this as either suspend-to-ram or
suspend-to-disk. Of course, the real solution is to fix your userspace
to not interact badly with thinkpad-acpi.

I am afraid, but this sounds exactly like how BOD started on my T20 14
months ago, especially if by "it does not return" you mean that at the
point where it should resume, it does a hard power down (neither power
nor moon-shaped sleep or any other indicator lighting, battery indicator
coming back some seconds later if plugged on AC).
