This actually sounds like a hardware problem, where the processor or
graphics chip assembly is becoming unsoldered from the system board.  U=
Tube
has a neat video with instructions on how to press on the system board =
with
the keyboard lifted and confirm the source of the problem, and others a=
bout
how to use a hot air gun to reflow the solder to remedy it.   I have th=
ree
system boards rescued from the junk pile using the technique, and a fou=
rth
yet to be fully cured.

This behavior is consistent with the ATI Graphics Bug, where the PCB
carrier is becoming unsoldered from the main system board.  Try pressin=
g
firmly down on the keyboard plastic thin strip between the space-bar an=
d
trackpoint buttons, on the left end of it.  If you hit power on and it =
then
comes up normally, you got the bug.
