That might have been just the audio?

This is mine with the TV connected:

And nothing in the xorg log either?

Yes, finding another device with a DisplayPort may be difficult. But
did you try another monitor, just to rule out problems with the monitor
and/or DVI cable?

I bought the DP adapter in March and it worked from the start. I just
looked through my backups and found that it did work with this
xorg/driver combo too:

X.Org X Server 1.5.99.901 (1.6.0 RC 1)
Release Date: (unreleased)
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.17.7 x86_64 Debian
Current Operating System: Linux nemi 2.6.29-1-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 24 22:24:50 UTC 2009 x86_64
Build Date: 27 January 2009 08:02:28AM
xorg-server 2:1.5.99.901-2 (buildd@xenophanes)

(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 1.5.99.901, module version = 2.6.1
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0

So I don't think the problem can be the versions you are using. Unless
there are specific bugs hitting you, of course. That possibility will
always make an upgrade worth testing.

Just for the record if anyone is interested: The adapter I'm using is
similar to this one (eBay item #250382295399):

 http://cgi.ebay.com/Display-Port-Male-To-HDMI-Female-Adapter-Converter_W0Q=
QitemZ250382295399

I bought it from
 http://stores.shop.ebay.com/PORTTAS-HDMI
 eBay user id: terstekel

Not trying to sell anything (and not affiliated with this seller in any
way), but I assume that there might be some interest in knowing about
where to get tested and working hardware. YMMV of course, and I can't
really know whether the seller has replaced the adapter with another one
looking identical to the one I got...
