Have you tried 9.10?

Which T61 version is this? My T61 (6466-55G, Intel video) works fine
with Ubuntu. I've initially installed Gutsy (7.10), then upgraded to
8.04, 8.10, 9.04, and am currently running 9.10.

Ubuntu normally takes care to set it up so you don't have to do that
yourself.

What CPU do you have? Mine is

  model name	: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7100 @ 1.80GHz
  cpu MHz : 800.000

/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor says I'm using
'ondemand' and you can see that it has been scaled down to 800 MHz.

What's cpufreq-selector?

Maybe, but I'd like to see some proof that you're not using ondemand alread=
y.
What does 'cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor' say?

Which GPU is this, and what driver do you use?

I'm guessing NVidia for the first.

If you are good, you will be assigned all the work. If you are real
good, you will get out of it.
