[ltp] framebuffer issues on X shutdown - fglrx or intel 945GM

Hi

I'm rather annoyed, let me get that off my chest to start with. That's
better.

Anyway, I've got two different gentoo machines with X logout console
problems:

Both run thinkpad-sources 2.6.27 with no login manager.

1) ATI X1300 with fglrx 8.561, kde 3.5.10, xorg-server 1.5.3

2) intel 945GM with xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1/mesa 7.2/DRI/kde4,
xorg-server 1.5.3

box 1 - fglrx, vesafb vga=0x317 - when ever I exit KDE3, it does not
return to the framebuffer console. The screen is blank and all you can
do is reboot the machine. silent typing on the console does nothing. If
you ssh in, nothing is chewing up CPU, no X process and no abnormal
syslog. atieventsd is not running. please refrain from telling me to
move to opensource drivers, if I could, I would. I hate fglrx as much as
you do. but it should start and stop cleanly after all these years!
(even if everything in between is broken) I don't think I am expecting
too much, even from ati. this used to work fine on xorg 7.3, but had to
move to xorg 7.4 for the new fglrx, so not so easy to nail the offending
package.

box 2 - intel 945GM vesafb vga=0x317 - exit from KDE4 - lvds remains
blank but on, can type silently and restart kde or reboot etc. tried
changing to intelfb but can't get that working either. yes before you
ask, I built a new kernel without vesafb so intelfb could work properly,
tried a few modes but all i got was total FB screen corruption on boot
and was totally broken. and all i want is 1024x768.

- if you have intelfb working at 1024x768, what is your kernel boot line?
- has anybody seen these issues?
- why is returning to the console such a big deal?

thanks
Aidan
