That's an interesting thought. I'll check that. My dri.conf is pretty
empty. If I remember right, cpu usage is comparably low, but I'll check
that, too.

Something else: colors in glxgears seem to be darker (e.g. not a pure
red but a faded red (as if some color is missing)). It may be related
with the refresh and points to wait-for-sync (or something like that).
