I stand corrected - though I think what I say was correct at least for<br>

But these days, KQEMU or VMWare are both sufficiently good that you<br>
needn't use a "real" install of Windows. Also, Wine handles a=

amount of software.<br>

The biggest problem I've had with VMWare (and I suspect KQEMU would be<=

the same) is with applications using USB. For instance, to reflash my<br>
mobile phone, it has to be powered on while connected to USB and so to<br>
the updater software. This didn't work under VMWare even though once th=

At least in QEMU (I don't have much experience with VMWare), ther=
e is<br>
an internal dhcp server and a virtual private network. So your laptop<br>
only exposes the IP address of your host OS; the guest OS is normally<br>
invisible to the outside world (though of course, you *can* set it to<br>
have it's own IP or port forwarding). This is essentially the same<br>
process as hiding many machines behind the same NAT firewall.<br>
<br>
You certainly can activate Windows in both QEMU and VMWare - have done both=
.<br>
<br>
Also, at least in Linux, it's very easy to alter your MAC address<br>
temporarily. The command:<br>
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:01:02:03:04:05<br>
will do it. Unique MAC addresses are burned into the EPROM of every<br>
network device, BUT the kernel doesn't have to use that one.<br>

QEMU can do this by passing through a given USB device by<br>
vendorid/productid. Try:<br>
-usbdevice "host:vendor_id:product_id"<br>
lsusb will tell you what these are.<br>
<br>
Note that many bits of hardware use more than one VID/PID depending on<br>
the mode they are in.<br>

Not the rescue partition on my T41. I have not heard on this list any=

I use Wine (strictly speaking, CrossOver Office) to run Quicken. It w=
orks<br>
well. TurboTax will not run satisfactorily under Wine.<br>
<br>
As you say, the virtualization packages are generally good enough. I =
intend<br>
to setup VMware to run the existing Windows partition as a "raw disk&q=
uot; (not<br>
virtual disk), since I never got around to getting the rescue/install CDs<b=

while under warranty. I doubt that it is practical to re-install from=
the<br>
rescue partition into a "virtual disk", i.e. a file.<br>

Do you have this problem if you use NAT? I.e., the Linux installation=

and IP masquerading for Windows?<br>

It seems like it impossible to get any specs on x300 15G model here in<br>

Looks like an adventure getting this to work, though the unlocking is<br>

Maybe your problem is the tearing video of the textured video XV port.<br>
<br>
Try this:<br>
<br>
$ xvinfo | grep -E "Adaptor|base"<br>
<br>
If you get 2 adaptors, and the first one is "Intel(R) Textured Video&q=
uot;,<br>
then use the port base of adaptor labeled "Intel(R) Video Overlay"=

mplayer:<br>

$ mplayer -vo xv:port=3Dportnumber movie.mpg<br>

There is a good workaround here. Some repair centres won't accept the<b=
r>
machine back for repairs with a Linux install (others are quite good<br>
about it), claiming that you must have a "supported OS". But many=
<br>
corporates are pretty fussy about their data. The service centres will<br>
understand if you say "Sorry, I'm not allowed to let the disk out =
of my<br>
sight; will send the machine back to you without the disk at all".<br>
<br>
Problem solved ;-)<br>

It's this line that causes the problem. Even if run on its own without<=
