I have two entries in each of those directories. I have ACPI_VIDEO compiled into
the kernel, while thinkpad_acpi is loaded as module. Perhaps the order in which
the drivers get loaded is the problem?

I'm using vanilla 2.6.27.6 together with the tp_smapi patch and I perhaps
another tp_acpi version than you. Also I suggest you update your BIOS. If I
remember correctly they changed some stuff regarding the brightness buttons
since your version was released.
Here's my dmesg output:
[ 6.095379] thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad ACPI Extras v0.21-20081019
[ 6.095381] thinkpad_acpi: http://ibm-acpi.sf.net/
