Have you tried running the Fedora Live CD on this machine to see how that
performs? Of course, it will be slower than an installed system, but it
might give you some indication whether the problem is your hardware or just
a hoaked up install.

A lightweight Ubuntu distribution.
Because software, like people, should be allowed to exist in an open,
sharing community, and not kept contained by corporate greed!
