Well the popular news these days are bios/pci rootkits. Its gotten me
pretty paranoid since I've downloaded and installed questionable programs.
I've wiped my computer since then, only because I found out my system was
compromised. While I can always wipe out kernel rootkits by reinstalling
again, this won't be the solve all solution forever. Eventually, when they
get bios rootkits in the wild, (and I'm feeling like they're getting closer
with each passing year) I won't be able to tell. As a result, I want to
keep a closer eye on my bios. I started by using a built in bios utility in
my desktop to extract the motherboard bios. I then compared it with the
original firmware that I flashed it with. Using winhex, I saw a rather
large block of modified code. I'm trying to find out why. In the mean
time, I've always considered thinkpads to be the most secure and safe to
connect to the net. Now I'm no longer sure about that which gets to my main
point. I was wondering if there is a motherboard bios extraction program
that I can use with the thinkpad t61?
Actually while I'm in the topic of the thinkpad bios I had another
question. When I was flashing my laptop with the most recent bootable bios
iso, I noticed that the system can flash two items. One being the system
update and the other being the bios update. What is the system update? It
wouldn't let me reflash it.
