Hello cr,

basically, yes: It is a bad idea to block the ventilation openings
of /any/ device. The CPU of the R40 could well be where you have
guessed.
As to the solution: There's a whole market of things you put under your
laptop to keep it cool. As well, you might be interested in this:

60=C2=B0 C sounds like you aren't using it.
