Quoting Henrique de Moraes Holschuh from the above link:

1. Prefer ATI over nVidia on the GPU, at least for the next three years.=20
   We should press nVidia to release docs, like ATI is now doing.=20

2. Prefer Intel over anything on the GPU if your needs have extreme 3D=20
   performance anywhere below "required". It will work better than ATI,=20
   extremely better than nVidia, and it will save a LOT of power over=20
   ATI and nVidia. Buying Intel GPUs and WiFi is a "vote with your wallet"=
=20
   issue, as they provide *FAR* better support, documentation and resources=
=20
   for open drivers than ATI (some docs, getting better) and nVidia (no hel=
p=20
   whatsoever).=20

Three years have passed since you said this, does your advice still
stand? Has the situation improved with nVidia drivers? If one were to
buy an T420s today and had to choose between=20
Intel=C2=AE HD 3000 and NVIDIA=C2=AE Quadro=C2=AE NVS4200M, which one is th=
e one to
get? Is there a chance nVidia drivers will improve to a point in the
next three years that it will be worthwhile to have an nVidia optimus
card running under Linux? And lastly, is there any harm in getting the
laptop with the nVidia chip and disabling it for the time being if the
price of the two T420s is nearly the same?

Sorry for all these questions, just trying to make the right long-term inve=
stment :)

Cheers,
Arian
