As a counterpoint to this: I bought an X61s right before they were
discontinued. As is the case for all models in the X60 and X61 series,
it was made entirely by Lenovo. To be honest, I was fantastically happy
with it. The plastic near the PCMCIA slot cracked after about 8 months,
but was promptly replaced under warranty, and the system has never had
any other troubles. It's flown about 18,000 miles in the year that I
used it, and survived being dropped from a tray table as well as being
knocked about innumerable times during my travel.

The X61s that I had actually fared much better than the first X40 that I
owned (despite the fact that the latter was designed and built by IBM),
which developed a pressure mark on the screen after just a short period
of use.

I can't really comment much on the battery's longevity, since I tend to
go through batteries exceptionally quickly due to my usage patterns.
That said, I haven't noticed the Lenovo batteries to be any worse than
any other brand's.

Just my 0.02 USD

Cheers,
