I got to this stage a year ago. I was running a T60p with Ubuntu and
everything was pretty good, but I thought it was about time to try a
proper commercial package and went out and bought a macbook.
My advice is, don't do it!
The macbook hardware is lovely; beautiful construction, fantastic
screen, some neat features like the illuminated keyboard and
light-sensitive screen backlight, but the software is awful.
It doesn't just work. Sometimes it doesn't work, and there's precious
little information to work out why. The consistent user interface isn't.
The keyboard is non-standard, so I've had to re-learn fundamental keys.
The use of 'cmd' instead of control (or whatever) is irritating.
Basically the mac follows no sensible UI guidelines except their own,
and flies in the face of commonly accepted practice. The number of times
my macbook has nearly been defenestrated because of loss of data because
of stupid ui deficiencies...
I could go on and on; I put up with it only because I've got VMWare
installed and can run a sensible operating system on the hardware.
Hope this helps!
Phil
