By "disable the sound system" I mean the sound
system software.
If you unload (or not load it at boot time) the
modules for the sound chip it should be disabled.
But you should follow Roberts advice, check if
something is using that chip and disable it, then
disable the sound system and then unload the sound
modules untill the result gets better.
