No it's also to cope with interfaces that don't do threading or don't do it
properly. See various ticket systems that tell you not to snip away the fully
quoted thread in the response.
I don't think Outlook is the only thing to blame here, even if it's probably
the worst offender.
Arguably a Thinkpad is a desktop product you'd run Linux on. In other technical
forums, where people run Linux exclusively on their server, you really see
people using Outlook. (And utterly failing to cope with mailing lists.)
