thanks for this I'll give it a whirl.

For what it's worth I have successfully used the method from thinkwiki page 
about splash screen changing

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_change_the_BIOS_bootsplash_screen

to extract working usb images. All that searching and mounting of memory images 
etc etc is a bit convoluted.
