Thanks for replying.
Yes, it's odd... both the HDD and the CDROM are original parts and
working, so there must be some other physical problem on the board.
This HDD is a 48-pin interface into a 48-pin connector- there's no room
for a jumper to be placed (though as you say, the HDD could otherwise be
configured as a master or slave if one could fit it with a jumper in some
other scenario). And, of course, that may not be the problem anyway.
I don't yet have USB access to the machine- I have ordered a PCMCIA/USB
card for it.
