I think you're fixing the "wrong" problem. Enjoy the highest resolution 
native display, and instead, set the DPI. Then you get fonts and icons 
at the size you want, while having maximum clarity.

but basically, there is a DPI "knob" in Xorg.conf (or ~/.Xresources, or 
in KDE or Gnome) that makes everything scale as you need it.
