Okay, I apologise for my mistake in thinking your question indicated
you might be a new user.   I agree that writing an image to a thumb
drive can easily not work properly, it does help to try the 'new' drive
on a known-bootable computer to confirm it works properly.    It usually
takes me a bit of experimentation and Googling any time I get a 'new'
laptop and try writing Linux to it.
