I think that it's highly likely that the kernel would have
only loaded the driver because some probe found the hardware and
asked for the iwlwifi module. If you can get lspic -v to work,
this might indicate something similar.
Do you have networkmanager installed? It usually has an icon in
the taskbar. As you've pointed out, wired ethernet works for you,
so it's possible that networkmanager is handling that and is
available for you to set up wifi.
Again, try "ip link" on the command line.
