The jury is still out on which laptop I'm going to buy.  I know I want
something less than 5 pounds but it also has to support linux fully.
Sound, Modem, Ethernet all have to work.

Yup, looks like the 240 has a Lucent modem.  I think I will be styaing
away from it just on that note alone.
