I can't help you with any solution, but can tell you that I have the
same problem with a ThinkPad 385XD and an Enhanced Port Replicator with
both Caldera and TurboLinux.

What video chip does your ThinkPad have?  Mine has a Neomagic 128XD.  I
suspect the problem is with the driver.

If you come across a solution please post it.

P.S.  The demo version of TurboLinux I have at the moment does not have
KDE, and the problem still occurs.  So it seems to me that the fault is
with the X Windows driver rather than KDE.
