mystery X lossage

I swear, nothing has changed.

Yet, I now find myself in a situation where the first time X starts up
after booting, it doesn't see the keyboard at all. The hardware sees
the keyboard (Fn-F4 will suspend, for example) but I can't type
anything, and Ctl-Alt-Fn won't switch me to another VT. I have to
telnet in from another machine and kill X. Then xdm restarts X, and
it works fine from then on. (I dread the day when I need to reboot
my machine when I'm not at home.)

Does this sound familiar? I'm running XFree86-3.3.2 on a 770ED,
RH 5.2.
