Full Screen display in character mode.

I remember back in days of old when Dos was all there was for PCs having
the BIOS support different text video modes under dos.

Would it be possible for Linux to use an expanded BIOS text mode that
actually used the 1024x768 pixels to either draw more rows and columns of
text or use a bigger "font" that made use of the additional pixels to
render more detailed characters?

Either that or try the new "graphics mode" console and have Linux draw the
Tuxes and every pixel of the text in "full screen" mode.
