I'm starting to be puzzled by this. Let me describe the setup, then the
puzzling part.

Kernel: 2.2.12-20, recompiled with apm on, etc, 1GB memory range.
The machine is a TP600x, model 2645-4EU, with two 256MB memory cards
(IBM part 33L3069 non-parity SDO DIMM 100Mhz, 3.3v) in addition to the
64M onboard.

POST reports 589248(k), which is not 576m, as one would expect.

If I boot with something like linux mem=512m, all goes well. Values
larger than this (even mem=513m) cause a hard lockup right after apm is
detected. I have no idea how to find the more important boot messages
which have scrolled off the screen, and are (AFAIKT) not written to any
logs, the file system having not yet been mounted.

HOWEVER (and here things get strange), as a result of hearing others on
this list suggest using the post value, I tried e.g. linux mem=589248k,
and the machine booted properly. My lilo and kernel configs are
attached, if this helps.

Let me know if you need more information. I could use some pointers on
how to capture the early boot messages, being a decent hacker, but by no
means a guru. For now, I'll change my config to use the value in K, and
start wondering about .5 meg instead of 64 meg. I'm willing to try just
about anything that would help your efforts ;-)
