Ok, sound mystery solved. attempting to start sound in enlightenment resulted in error that the sound server ...esoundd not able to run... when typing esd at the command line it gave me an error about ..../tmp/.esd/... like the file was locked. anyhow...sorry for the goofy explanation but I rm -rf /tmp/.esd , restarted x, re-enabled sound. Works great...hope someone else finds this useful.

Interestingly once enabling sound it worked again. The difference may have been a setting in KDE(I think) for enabling/starting the sound server. That is not an option for me this time as I am running enlightenment desktop manager.
