For the record, my FA411 works fine under Redhat 7.3 (and 7.2) on a
Thinkpad 600, a Thinkpad 760XD, and a Thinkpad 380XD.

On the 600, since I was short on available IRQs due to the DSP modem, I
had to give it IRQ 7. One oddity, the card only seems to work properly
in the lower PCMCIA slot on the 600. If I put it in the upper slot, I
get some rather odd errors and the card doesn't work:

Aug 14 16:19:09 tycho cardmgr[774]: initializing socket 0
Aug 14 16:19:09 tycho cardmgr[774]: socket 0: Anonymous Memory
Aug 14 16:19:10 tycho cardmgr[774]: executing: 'modprobe memory_cs'
Aug 14 16:19:10 tycho cardmgr[774]: + modprobe: Can't locate module
memory_cs
Aug 14 16:19:10 tycho cardmgr[774]: modprobe exited with status 255
Aug 14 16:19:10 tycho cardmgr[774]: module
/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/pcmcia/memory_cs.o not available
Aug 14 16:19:11 tycho cardmgr[774]: get dev info on socket 0 failed:
Resource temporarily unavailable

In the lower slot of my 600:

Aug 14 16:20:14 tycho cardmgr[774]: initializing socket 1
Aug 14 16:20:14 tycho cardmgr[774]: socket 1: NetGear FA411 Fast Ethernet
Aug 14 16:20:14 tycho cardmgr[774]: executing: 'modprobe 8390'
Aug 14 16:20:15 tycho cardmgr[774]: executing: 'modprobe pcnet_cs'
Aug 14 16:20:15 tycho cardmgr[774]: executing: './network start eth0'
Aug 14 16:20:15 tycho kernel: eth0: NE2000 Compatible: io 0x300, irq 7,
hw_addr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

... and the card works as it should.

I don't understand why my 600 can't figure out the type of card I have if
I use the upper PCMCIA slot. Maybe it's something weird I might have set
in the BIOS, but it works in the lower slot so it's not THAT big of a
deal.

Here's the first part of my /etc/pcmcia/config.opts:

#
# Local PCMCIA Configuration File
#
#----------------------------------------------------------------------

# System resources available for PCMCIA devices

include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0xc00-0xcff
include memory 0xc0000-0xfffff
include memory 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff, memory 0x60000000-0x60ffffff

# High port numbers do not always work...
# include port 0x1000-0x17ff

# Extra port range for IBM Token Ring
include port 0xa00-0xaff

# Resources we should not use, even if they appear to be available

# First built-in serial port
exclude irq 4
# Second built-in serial port (mwave)
exclude irq 3
# First built-in parallel port
# exclude irq 7
# PS/2 Mouse controller port, comment this out if you don't have a PS/2
# based mouse
exclude irq 12
