Hi,
Just FYI, the recovery process changed at some point after the T21 from
recovery CD to recovery from disk.
My experience since then has been if you go to recover with a linux
partition on the disk, it restores the original partition table (or else
freaks out and crashes. But it hasn't done that in a while :-).
BUT, things are always changing round here, and sometimes the beta stuff
doesn't behave the same as the stuff they actually release anyways. So, I
could be wrong.
I would still proceed with EXTREME CAUTION.

When I get a new machine, I do a complete recovery. That way I know
what's involved, I'm sure I've made any floppies required, etc., and I
can do it with no fear of losing any personal data.
The recovery CD provided with my T21 warns repeatedly it will format the
entire disk, but only wipes the first partition (/dev/hda1).
When I bought the machine, I bought another identical hard disk and a
carrier to mount it in the ultrabay. That's my backup:
dd if=/dev/hdaX of=/dev/hdcX
I intend to use dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc, but something about this
kills Window$ 2000, which is what the machine came with. When I get rid
of W$k, I'll be set.
You need somewhere to put your Linux partitions in case the recovery
system on yours eats the entire hard disk. What do you have for backup?
I played with VMware a while back, and I remember the idea of making a
new hardware profile in Window$ before starting a native partition so
that one could switch back and forth between the configurations. I
don't know how practical that is with W2k and current VMware.
So, where can you backup your current GNU/Linux to?
