Hi Robert,

Just FYI, another solution would be to use mii-tool to detect a link
beat.

This is one of the tricks I do with my 'whereami' (Debian) package for
autodetecting and configuring the laptop for different locations.

Another useful trick is to set the DHCP timeout to a low value.
