I installed Linux Mandrake 9.0 on a Thinkpad 600. No sound card was dete=
cted. =20
The problem I describe below was also present in LM 8.x, but not in LM 7.=
x=20
where I could manually configure the sound card.

1. Sound was not properly configured during installation (no card detecte=
d)
2. Running sndconfig (v0.68) as root I get:

=09No PnP or PCI sound cards were found
=09in your system. Please select your
=09card type from the following list.

3. After trying to manually configure the Crystal CS4237 card and play a=
=20
sample sound I get:

=09modprobe error
=09The following error occurred running the modprobe program:
=09/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o.gz:
=09init_module: No such device
=09modprobe: insmod
=09/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o.gz failed
=09modprobe: insmod sound-slot-0 failed

The file /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o.gz exist=
s
as do
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4232.o.gz
/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/sound/isa/cs423x/cs4232.c
/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/drivers/sound/cs4232.c
/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/drivers/sound/cs4232.h

What gives? Sound works fine under Windoze. Any help or pointers in the=
=20
right direction would be greatly appreciated.
