Hey I recently fixed the sound on my machine..
What you may have to do is go into the BIOS (Hold F1 during a cold or warm
boot)
and go into config, and disable quick-setup, that disables the pnp functions
at boot that seem to stop sounds from loading in linux, and modems for that
matter.

if this helps, thanks the list.. cause without them there is no me :-D

Subject: [ltp] Sound / TP600 / Mandrake9.0/8.x

*** List MOVED use linux-thinkpad@linux-thinkpad.org for future postings ***

I installed Linux Mandrake 9.0 on a Thinkpad 600. No sound card was
detected.
The problem I describe below was also present in LM 8.x, but not in LM 7.x
where I could manually configure the sound card.

1. Sound was not properly configured during installation (no card detected)
2. Running sndconfig (v0.68) as root I get:

No PnP or PCI sound cards were found
in your system. Please select your
card type from the following list.

3. After trying to manually configure the Crystal CS4237 card and play a
sample sound I get:

modprobe error
The following error occurred running the modprobe program:
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o.gz:
init_module: No such device
modprobe: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod sound-slot-0 failed

The file /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o.gz exists
as do
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4232.o.gz
/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/sound/isa/cs423x/cs4232.c
/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/drivers/sound/cs4232.c
/usr/src/linux-2.4.19-16mdk/drivers/sound/cs4232.h

What gives? Sound works fine under Windoze. Any help or pointers in the
right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Paul
