As with Windows, the more the merrier.  RAM is cheap these days, so at
minimum I'd put in another 128M.  If you want to run the major desktops
and Open Office, you will definitely want more than 64M in your machine.

You'll need *a* swap partition for Linux.  You cab create that during the
Linux install.

You can't hibernate the machine without a DOS partition.  Note that you
don't actually have to install DOS on it - it must just exist, be
formatted, and prepared with the PS2.EXE utility.

No.

When I installed Linux on a 600 (no E), I used a DOS boot disk to
make/format a DOS partition (needs to be at least RAM + video RAM size
large), formatted it, and used PS2.EXE to make the hibernation file. 
Then, I installed Linux on the rest of the drive.
