To swith IR on and off you need to use the pnp tools.  There have been a
number of problems with pnp and thinkpads, but suse 9 should be ok.

try "lspnp -v".  you should see a list of plug'n play devices, among
them the IR port.  if it is enabled, issue "setpnp -b <port nr. in hex>
off", and that should be it...

If pnp is not enabled in your kernel, you can do the same with the "ps2"
dos utility by ibm (that is, if you still have a bootable windows
partition...)
