I also read through quickly, and the criteria allow used if it's in
working condition at the time of sale.

Since the seller insists it was, seems you're covered.  You have 30 days
after the end of auction to buy the warranty.  Keep the buyer's
assertions, maybe get him to write that is was great last he saw...
