[ltp] 760ED battery problems

Hello,

I've been the (intermittently content and frustrated) owner of a 760ED for
over 2 years, and am running Debian on it, currently with no major problems.

Ever since I bought it (second hand) it's never been able to run off the
batteries. A few months ago, this started annoying me more as my cramped
desk setup caused the AC adaptor to be regularly nudged around, meaning that
the machine would go off and I'd have to fsck. So I took it to a repair
shop, and they fixed whatever part it was, so that it could run off
batteries. (At which point I noticed how poor the battery life was...)

However, the /other/ thing that really annoyed me about this model was the
excuse for a soundcard that calls itself `mwave'. About a month ago, I
discovered that
1) people had successfully switched the mwave card with the ESS soundcard
used in some other 760 models, and
2) a UK laptop spares supplier could get me such a soundcard at a reasonable
price

So I printed out the relevant section of the hardware maintenance manual,
and took an afternoon replacing the sound card. It now works like a charm.
The only problem is that since I performed this operation, the batteries
have stopped working again.

Has anyone else had the same problem after doing this changeover? Is there
a particular card that I might have replaced incorrectly that I should check
the attachments on again? Or am I going to have to take it back for another
repair (while giving them strict instructions /not/ to touch the soundcard)?
