It sounds like screen-expand got toggled on your Thinkpad.  You can
toggle it by pressing Fn+F8.

I entered the thinkpad bios by holding F1 while booting and there appear to be no configuration for pcmcia or serial ports.  Finally this made me think the modem was actually bad....unfortunately I just put it in another system and it works fine.

Perhaps your PCMCIA hardware has gone bad.  See if any other PC cards
work in your system.
