[ltp] OpenSSL, zlib, & OpenSSH - "Permission Denied"

Hey All, I think I've overlooked a step in setting up my SSH properly.
I downloaded, configured, and compiled zlib-1.1.4, openssl-0.9.7b, and =
openssh-3.6p1 and appear to have no errors.
But if I try to log in as root (even) to localhost, I get "permission =
denied"
I'm going through the README's and checking other sources such has "How =
To's", but I've followed the steps and get no errors.
Oh, I did do a "ps -C sshd" so I do know that it is running. =20
I appreciate your suggestions and or referrals for another source to =
read or contact.
