In recent versions, urpmi is pretty good (e.g. you just type "urpmi 
packagename" to have it installed, provided that:

1)You set up urpmi sources correctly. This web tool makes it really easy:

2)You only install rpms that are packaged for that release of Mandrake.
This isn't usually a problem, as between
	main (the distro)
	contribs (volunteer-contributed unofficial packages)
	plf ("penguin liberation front", packages with possible legal 		
		issues in USA),
you should have all you want. Of course, you can always package software
yourself.


Incidentally, Mandrake update is nice. Once you have an update source 
defined, then each time there is a security alert, simply
"urpmi.update updates; urpmi --auto-select" to get them all installed.


Personally, I would advise waiting a week for Mandrake 9.2.
