[ltp] Building 2.4.22, 2.6.0-test7 - in vain

I'm not new to Linux ((been building kernels since 0.99 pl 13!) but for
the past week I've been trying to build a new kernel for my T40 which is
running RedHat 9 (2.4.20-8). I'm trying 2.6.0-test7, and after failing
for a week finally went back to 2.4.22, and it still fails. I've tried
many different .config files from existing thinkpad users and the net.
The main problems I'm running into are 1) piles of unresolved symbols in
modules, 2) bootup messages reporting a problem with iptables (can't
find 'filters' table in iptables), 3) gripes that my Linksys WPC-11 has
been removed when it really hasn't (and when I say "remove
configuration" it results in a segmentation fault...) etc.

T40 is a model 2379D6U, 1024 MB, with Linksys WPC-11 PCMCIA card.

Has anyone been able to get a T40 working with 2.6.0 and if so which
"-test" release, and would you be able to provide a .config file for me
to try?

Thanks,
