Mine is T40 2373.

So probably you have RAM upgarde. What's the type? I have also. Mine is
10K0030 IBM ThinkPad 256 mt DDR PC2100

Completely the same but I don't use Windows (however I kept it for these
kind of reasons) I tried everything and about all their combinations
written on all the T40 web pages and here in the list.

Another thing I noticed in the last 2-3 months, the lockup seems to happen
with higher chance slightly after resume: something like 3-15 minutes
afterwards, not immediataly (I had thoses as well but that is solved thanks
to the tips).

I didn't notice this but I also wouldn't sware for this, only the aboves :)

1-3 times a day.

Well, I'll definitely try with Windows now ... In your place I wouldn't
hesitate a minute to go to IBM Service.

I know about Fabrice's excellent page (actually that one conviced me to buy
this laptop ;) I insisted buying the more expensive IBM RAM upgarde to
avoid such problems. I just checked Fabrice's page and he also used IBM RAM
-- hmm I remembered otherwise. I'll test RAM as well ... even if the
problem seems to be "mouse"/graphics card related ...

Thanks :)
