Sounds to me like GEdit, in GNOME. Or possibly Kate, in KDE.  This is
why Red Hat's merging of desktops is a PITA...

I'd just point out that notepad and these editors are fairly different
-- notepad doesn't support embedding in other applications, opening
documents directly from web servers, or syntax highlighting.

However, more memory is the way to go -- 64M would be very painful in
RH9.
