Please allow me to nitpick a bit, if only because its a thread for a
newbie and its better not to potentially misguide them.  That said:

They all don't have the same hardware capabilities, and they aren't
all the same as every distribution ships with its own set of kernel
patches which in some cases (Red Hat) aren't trivial at all.

So, while its possible to get a vanilla (that is standard) kernel and
relatively easily patch it to support whatever driver, if you are a
newbie, don't expect the added red hat functionality to be carried on.

:) I had a newbie try redhat 9 [0].. haven't seen mandrake, but I'd go in
favor of it from what I've heard and my experience with RH9.
