I don't use Fedora, so this may not all be the same...

Try starting the system at runlevel 3 (console mode). If you are using lilo, hit esc and type linux 3 (substitute whatever you may have set in /etc/lilo.conf for linux) at the boot screen. Don't know about grub.

Then you can log in and type startx - this should give you loads of debugging output to the screen and you may see the problem there.

You could also check the log file (/var/log/XFree86.0.log on my Mandrake system).

If you need any further help, publish the output / log here.
