I had this problem a while ago, and there was this response on the list:

I have an R40 2681-HSG. I had the same problem. It was fixed by a patch 
which can be found on:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1415

In the end, I never tried it, I simply switched back to APM.  OK, I don't 
have suspend to disk, but I hardly use that anyway....
