Yeah that's my R50. It was worth doing. I can tell you that the T41p fan 
does not come on nearly as often as the original 'short' fan model. It 
is much more responsive to the cpu load and goes off quite quickly after 
coming on. No idea why (improved in Windows & Linux, not related to 
power management?), but it works MUCH better. Even on lowest speed and 
with no activity, the origial fan would keep spinning and spinning (with 
the annoying 5-sec pulse to boot).

I've only ever bothered to look at temperatures in Windows, but I have 
noticed the fan come on fairly early at 100% load (low 40s). It seems to 
stay on until it drops to about 37 or 38 then it goes off, which takes a 
minute or two. By comparison the old fan would simply not turn off at 
that point, had a mind of it's own.
