Check the permissions on /dev/dsp. You may need to add your username to 
the audio group if you have note already done so.

Also, if the default kernel sound drivers are no good, get a hold of the 
alsa drivers. Not sure how gentoo handles these, but in Debian they are 
packaged as a separate set of kernel modules. Remember to disable the 
default kernel sound modules if you install alsa.
