I'm running Debian/unstable on my R40 (2722-GDM) and had the same issue
waking up from ACPI S3. Reading the acpi-devel list, it appears that
linux doesn't enable the Wake GPEs properly yet. In the meanwhile,
there is a patch that seems to work:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1415

Before sleeping 'echo " LID" > /proc/power/acpi_wakeup_devices' (from
memory - I don't have the laptop nearby). The lid switch now wakes it
up (although in my case there are some modules that don't like
suspending that I haven't yet debugged).

Hope this is of use,

Mark
