When I ran the recovery process, it kept the partitioning scheme. I
suggest that you

1) backup as there are no guarantees
2) have /dev/hda1 large enough (in my case, 10 GB) 
3) a valid fat32 filesystem on /dev/hda1
3) then try to run the recovery.

In my case, this worked.

Yes, if you can live with the textmode bios instead of IBM's graphical
thing. You do not loose any functionality.
